The aggregation update is firmware rather than new hardware, which matters if you already have these switches in service. Ubiquiti describes a rebuilt multi-chassis link aggregation engine, quicker RSTP convergence when the network is under load, and a larger MAC learning table.
The more interesting item is hardware-triggered reconvergence. Combined with MC-LAG, the claim is that a core can survive losing a fibre path or an entire switch, which is the failure mode that usually forces a conversation about moving to another vendor.
The second-generation access switches bring 10GbE to the edge with high PoE budgets, hardware-supported MACsec for link-layer encryption, and a separate 100G backplane for stacking. Ubiquiti frames stacking here as fault tolerance at the edge rather than just cable tidiness.
On the software side, Ubiquiti points to Digital Twin, Time Machine and Optics Health for visibility, with Optics Health aimed squarely at monitoring SFP links before they degrade into intermittent faults. SafeOps is the umbrella term for designing and running large networks with fewer single points of failure, and Ubiquiti is explicit that it is licence-free.
For prosumers running a home or small office network, this announcement changes almost nothing today. A 3.2 Tb/s core is not a home product, and the practical takeaway is simply that the platform you already manage is being extended upward rather than fragmented.
For integrators, the story is more useful. The gap in the UniFi story has always been the layer above aggregation, and quoting a site with a defined core, MC-LAG at aggregation and stacked 10G access is a very different conversation from stitching together aggregation switches and hoping. MACsec in hardware also removes an objection that comes up on multi-tenant and education sites in Australia.
SMB IT teams should read the licensing point carefully, because it is the genuine differentiator. Competing core and aggregation platforms typically attach subscriptions to the features you actually want, and removing that from the budget line changes the five-year comparison more than any single throughput number does.
Two caveats. Ubiquiti has not stated port configurations, pricing, model identifiers or Australian availability for the new hardware, so nothing here should go into a quote yet. And the aggregation improvements, while welcome, are firmware refinements to shipping gear rather than a step change — worth scheduling, not worth re-architecting around.
If you are planning a larger site, it is worth thinking about the surrounding infrastructure at the same time: optics and patching, rack space and airflow for 100G gear, and power protection for the core. Those decisions tend to be harder to change later than the switch itself, and they apply across the enterprise deployment side of the range regardless of which model finally ships.
